Indroduction and Uses of Cefotaxime Sodium

Cefotaxime Sodium stops bacteria from making their cell wall, so the bacteria die. Cefotaxime sodium is used to treat serious lower respiratory tract and urinary tract infections, gynecologic infections, and infections of the blood, skin, and central nervous system. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.

Cefotaxime Sodium are second-generation cephalosporins used chiefly for surgical prophylaxis as well as treating respiratory tract, skin and structure, bone and joint, urinary tract, gynecologic, and intra-abdominal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Cefotaxime Sodium is given by an injection in the vein over 30 minutes, 2 to 4 times a day. Cefotaxime Sodium is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of drugs called cephalosporins which are used to treat infections in many different parts of the body. They are sometimes given with other antibiotics. Some cephalosporins given by injection are also used to prevent infections before, during, and after surgery.

This drug is available in the form of injection.

Possible Side effects of Cefotaxime Sodium

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

  • Hardening of vein used for giving the drug
  • Vaginal candidiasis (fungal infection)
  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Prolonged bleeding time
  • Abdominal or stomach cramps and pain
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Seizures
  • Diarrhea (watery and severe, which may also be bloody)
  • Allergic reaction with fever
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising

Dosage and dosing of Cefotaxime Sodium

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Cefotaxime Sodium

  • Use of antibiotics can change the normal organisms of your body. Women are at risk of getting fungal infections. Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you get vaginal itching or discharge.
  • Stop the drug and call your doctor or nurse right away if you develop a rash, fever, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of face or lips. This can be a serious reaction and needs to be treated right away.

  • This drug should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems.

Storage conditions of Cefotaxime Sodium

Keep Cefotaxime Sodium in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
