Cladribine - Cladribine Drug Information

Indroduction and Uses of Cladribine

Cladribine is chemotherapy that is given mainly as a treatment for hairy cell leukaemia and (more rarely) chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, but is also used to treat some types of low-grade lymphoma.

Cladribine prevents cells from making DNA and RNA by interfering with the synthesis of nucleic acids, thus stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Possible Side effects of Cladribine

Each person's reaction to chemotherapy is unique. Some people have very few side effects, while others may experience more. The side effects described in this information will not affect everyone who is given cladribine, and may be different if you are having more than one chemotherapy drug.

  • Anaemia (low number of red blood cells)
  • Bruising or bleeding
  • Skin rash
  • Fatigue
  • Your liver and kidneys may be affected
  • Feeling sick (nausea)

Dosage and dosing of Cladribine

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Cladribine

  • Your ability to conceive or father a child may be affected by taking this drug. It is important to discuss fertility with your doctor before starting this treatment.
  • Cladribine can lower your blood counts (white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets). Your doctor will check your blood counts before and after each treatment to see its effect on your blood counts. Your doctor or nurse will give you specific instructions for low blood counts.
  • Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any discomfort or change in sensation at the injection site during or after the infusion.
  • Cladribine can lower the platelet count, which can increase your risk of bleeding. DO NOT take any aspirin or aspirin-containing medicines. Report unusual bruising or bleeding such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums when you brush your teeth, or black, tarry stools.

Storage conditions of Cladribine

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) has been called the most important tumor marker in oncology. Certainly in prostate cancer, it has revolutionized our ability to detect the disease early, as well as follow the course of the disease in patients after being treated with different therapies.

Health Tip

Air-filled cavities as sinuses are found in the skull bones around the nose and eyes. The mucus-secreting membrane that lines them can become blocked due to infection.
